Department of Human Anatomy and Histology & Embryology

1. Department Brief Introduction

The Department of Human Anatomy and Histology & Embryology at the Capital Medical University (CCMU) School of Basic Medical Sciences comprises two teaching and research sections: Human Anatomy, and Histology & Embryology. Human Anatomy and Histology study the normal morphological structure, microstructure, and related functions of the human body. Embryology primarily investigates human embryonic development, developmental processes, and their regulatory mechanisms. Human Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology are essential foundational compulsory courses for medical students, distinguishing them from students in other disciplines. This discipline was one of the first at CCMU authorized to confer Master's degrees. It was designated as a Beijing Key Construction Discipline in 1997, authorized to confer Doctoral degrees in 2000, approved as a Beijing Key Discipline in 2002, and is currently a doctoral degree-granting discipline in Basic Medical Sciences and hosts a postdoctoral research station in Basic Medical Sciences.

Adhering to the guiding principle of closely integrating basic research with clinical diseases, the Department focuses on socioeconomic development and medical needs. It encompasses research on diseases closely related to human life, exploring pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies. Driven by innovation and guided by the goal of clinical translation, the Department has developed distinctive research strengths in the following areas:

(1) Cerebrovascular Diseases and Cognition Research;

(2) Synaptic Mechanisms of Alzheimer's Disease Research;

(3) Gastrointestinal Aging-Related Diseases and Intervention Strategies Research;

(4) Cancer and Metabolic Diseases Research;

(5) Mechanisms of Oocyte Development and Aging Research;

(6) Mitochondrial Function and Tissue Damage Repair Research;

(7) Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine.

3. Teaching Activities (Courses Offered, Student Supervision)

Human Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology are among the most crucial foundational medical disciplines, closely linked to various clinical specialties and highly valued by medical students and clinicians. The Department offers Human Anatomy and Histology & Embryology courses, each consisting of theoretical lectures and laboratory sessions, designed for both undergraduate and international students. The Department also offers the graduate course Histochemistry and Immunohistochemistry, and online courses: Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, and Normal Human Morphology Laboratory.
